Large Beguinage, Mechelen

Historical quarter where semi-monastic women known as Beguines used to live. The predecessor of this beguinage, founded in the 13th century outside the city walls, was destroyed in the 16th century, the Beguine community then re-established itself in an existing neighborhood within the walls. Since 1998, this and 12 other Flemish beguinages have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
