The Fort Markenbinnen is currently being used by RBOC "Fort Markenbinnen", an education and training centre for firefighters and rescue workers. This foundation has refurbished the fortress. The wooden partitions in the fort’s premises and the sanitation facilities are still in place.
The fort is relatively isolated from its neighbouring forts; there was no road to connect it directly to the forts near Spijkerboor and Krommeniedijk. Fort Markenbinnen is located in a nature reserve.
Fort Markenbinnen was built to defend the Markervaart and the road alongside this canal, as well as the east bank of the Westwouderpolder and both banks of the river Stierop. It 1905 the fortress reached its final completion, when the construction of the shellproof building was finished. Just east of the stronghold is a secondary battery: it’s an earthen wall constructed in 1906 that features artillery positions made of concrete. Near the fort you'll find an inlet culvert at the Knollendammervaart canal, for the purpose of flooding the northern part of the Starnmeerpolder.
The fort can be visited by appointment on written request as part of a paid guided tour.
